This senior class is one of the most accomplished in South Football History. In the three years that many of them spent on varsity, these seniors earned three MAC White Division Championships, two MHSFCA All-Academic teams, three trips to the MHSAA State Playoffs and BEAT north twice by a combined score of 96-0.
South Football Senior Profile #58 Owen Chen DT/OT
Owen is perhaps the most talented individual I have ever coached. Not only on the football field but in every aspect of his life. In football; he is a big, tough, quick defensive linemen who was nearly impossible to block. I can hear Coach Srebs now screaming “they’re holding him!” He was a three-year starter at 3 tech (one of the most difficult defensive positions) and earned three varsity letters in football. In his senior year, Owen started both ways at 3 tech and offensive tackle. Off the field, he is a concert oboist (look it up) both for South and the Detroit Junior Symphony Orchestra. In his “spare” time Owen earned his black belt in karate.
As a senior Owen was elected team captain by his teammates and coaches. He was a three-time All-MAC White honoree (1st Team as a senior) and also earned three MAC All-Academic awards with a 3.65 GPA. Owen earned the South Football Leadership Award and the Frank Sumbera Foundation scholarship. He also earned honorable mention All-East in the Detroit Free Press. Owen was a joy to coach for the past three years, I truly can’t remember a time when he didn’t have that huge smile on his face.
